Can someone clue me in on the differences between the 2000
and 4000 series tractors. I see JD Homepage lists the 2000
series as an "Advantage Utility Tractor and the 4000 series
as a "Utility tractor". I see that when you get to their
5000 series...they tend to get up into the 40 HP or better
catagory.

Also I note that they had a 3 digit series (700, 750, 800 etc)
Where they what the new 2000 series are now?. What little
I've seen of them...the 3 digit series seemed comparable to
the 4000 series. (I've yet to see a 2000 series). Any info
appreciated.

There are a lot of differences between the product lines but they overlap some as well. I'll try for an overview.

The 790 is a solid, simple, reliable tractor of an older but proven design. It is the economy choice and doesn't have much in the way of bells and whistles and doesn't offer a hydro transmission, but it's a solid machine that will do a lot of work.

The 4000 TEN series tractors are newer designs that generally have higher hydraulic capacities, a full range of transmissions, lots of hp and frame size choices, more comfy and roomy operator platforms, and a lot more bells and whistles and options.

The 5000 series don't get talked about a lot here but they are offered in higher hp capacities and (I think) have cab options.

If you have a JD dealer near you they usually are happy to give you a bunch of brochures so you can compare them all. There are a lot of differences in dimensions, weight, capacities, hp, cab options, etc. If you're on a dial-up like I am the JD web site is pretty cumbersome and their brochures give a lot of details in a few pages. ....

The 2210 is simular to the 4010 tractor with these differences.
-Engine. 2210 has the larger 23 hp engine (same cu.in. as 4110) but rated at higher hp closer to the 4115 at 24 hp.

-Hydraulics. The 2210 uses a rear mounted fan that blows air across the transmission, much like the smaller lawn tractors, while the 4010 have a front mounted hydraulic oil cooler by the radiator.

-Bells and whistles. 2210 has no cruise control, turning brakes, or folding rops (roll over protection).

-Tires and wheels. 2210 has smaller wheels which gives the tractor less ground clearance and less lift height on the three point hitch.

2210 is a great high hp, low priced tractor. 4010 is a slightly higher priced more deluxe tractor. The two tractors weight about the same, 1400 vs 1420 lbs.

JD compact tractor history.
JD started in the compact tractors with the 50 series. They were built in Japan by Yanmar. These were the 650, 750, up to 1050 in the compact size and larger 1250 and 1450 in the utility tractors. The 50 series were all gear transmissions. The 50 series were replaced with the 70 series gear models (670 thru 1070) and 55 series hydrostatic models (655 thru 955). Then the larger 1250 and 1450 were replaced with the 5000 series (made in Augusta Georgia) These 5000 are the smallest tractors built using the JD designed and built engine.
The 70 series and 55 series Yanmar built tractors were replaced with the 4000 series. Starting in 98 with the 4100 being a Yanmar built 20 hp available in both gear and Hydro transmissions. The 4200 thru 4700 were built in Augusta Georgia and feature a new "Lower RPM, Direct Injected" Yanmar engine, Eaton Hydrostatic transmissions, and Funk gear transmissions. In 2000 the 770 and 970 were re-introduced to market as the 790 and 990. These feature the old 70 series gear tractors with the new 4000 series tractor engines. The 4000 series were replaced in 2002 with the current 4010 series. The 4010 series have added models 4010,4110(replacing the 4100),4115, and also the new in 2003 model 2210, all being Yanmar built machines. The 4210-4710 are still built in Augusta Georgia. They now feature electronically controlled Danuser(sunstrand) Hydrostatic transmissions in place of the Eaton hydro unit.
I hope I haven't bored anyone and maybe even someone finds this info helpful.

JDF415, not boring in the least. One of the best informative and brief posts in quite a long time! Great post! I would think that you have sold a few of these in your day? You seem to know your Deere's. ;o) ....
